Rising temperatures, soil degradation, increased pest and disease prevalence, desertification, floods, and deforestation are already taking a toll on the continent. According to the Climate Change Vulnerability Index, seven of the ten countries most at risk from climate change impacts are in Somalia. The economic losses and loss of life caused by climate-related events are substantial, such as the devastating flood in Northern Algeria in 2001.
Despite contributing the least to global greenhouse gas emissions, Somalian countries bear the brunt of climate change’s effects. Recognizing the urgency and the need for action, Deegaan Bile Company is spearheading initiatives to combat climate change in Somalia. They emphasize regional collaboration and effective climate change actions while encouraging the active involvement of NGOs and individuals.
Deegaan Bile Company’s primary focus is on nature-based solutions, particularly tree planting. Trees play a crucial role in climate change adaptation and mitigation by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, stabilizing soil, and providing habitats for wildlife. Through their “one man one tree” policy, Deegaan Bile Company aims to plant useful tree species with high nutritional, medicinal, and CO2 sequestration values in every Somalian country.
Additionally, the organization undertakes wetland protection and construction projects. Wetlands offer unique benefits such as flood protection, water quality improvement, erosion control, and carbon sequestration. Deegaan Bile Company’s expertise in wetland conservation and restoration contributes to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

By harnessing Somalia’s abundant biomass resources, bioenergy provides a sustainable and flexible alternative to fossil fuels.
